Saving the 'Big Two'

Heritage’s latest environmental drive specifically targets the two natural resources that Kenya faces the greatest danger of running out of: fresh water and electrical power. The need to conserve our diminishing water resources has never been more urgent, and must begin with an industry that has one of the country’s largest per capita uses. Heritage has risen to the challenge by undertaking an extensive study of its freshwater uses and implementing wide-ranging conservation measures, including the installation of meters on all boreholes and springs, the close monitoring and quick repair of pipes and taps, the installation of low-use urinals and toilets, aerated faucets and push-taps, and the recycling of all wastewater for gardens. Since early 2005, all staff have also undergone training courses on the importance of water conservation.

Heritage’s larger properties have been fitted with ‘Switchcard’ systems, which automatically turn off lights and airconditioners when a guest leaves his or her room. Low-wattage bulbs have been installed in all rooms and tents, while security lights have switched to energy-saving bulbs – leading to a 70% reduction in energy use. Generator operating times have also been significantly reduced in all properties, while a Glycocol-based temperature stabilisation system promises to dramatically cut power requirements for all refrigerators and cold-rooms.
